Some minor illnesses are covered free on the NHS, and if yours is, that's where you should start. Here's the simple way to tell them apart. Either way, if you book the wrong one, the pharmacist will always point you to the right route.
Free on the NHS
Under NHS Pharmacy First, our pharmacist can treat seven common conditions free for eligible patients, with no appointment and no charge. Choose this if your issue is one of them.
It covers sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles and uncomplicated urinary infections, each with its own age or eligibility rules.

Choose this if your issue isn't on the NHS list, you fall outside the NHS age or eligibility rules, or you'd simply like a booked time and a general health chat.
It's open to anyone, covers a much wider range of everyday illnesses and questions, and treatment can often happen on the day where it's suitable.

How is this different from the free NHS service?
NHS Pharmacy First covers seven specific conditions free for eligible patients, with age rules for some of them. The private consultation has no such limits: it's open to anyone, covers a much wider range of minor illnesses and general health questions, and gives you a booked time rather than waiting to be seen. If your issue fits the free NHS service, we'll always tell you and treat you under that instead.
How much does it cost?
The consultation is £20 and covers the pharmacist's time, assessment and advice. If a prescription medicine is suitable and you choose to have it, that's priced separately and always explained clearly before you decide anything.
Do I need to book, or can I walk in?
Booking is best, as it gives you a set time with the pharmacist and the shortest wait. Walk-ins are welcome too, and we'll see you as soon as we can around any booked appointments.
Who is it for? Can I bring my child?
It's open to adults and children. A parent or guardian should be present for anyone under 16. The pharmacist decides what's safe and suitable for each person, and will refer to your GP or another service if that's the right step.
What happens if the pharmacist can't treat me?
You still get a proper assessment, honest advice and a clear next step, which may include seeing your GP or another NHS service. You won't be left without a plan.
When should I call NHS 111 or 999 instead?
Call NHS 111 for urgent advice when you're unsure what to do or symptoms are getting worse. Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe bleeding, signs of a stroke, a severe allergic reaction, or a sudden severe headache.
