What microsuction actually is.
Microsuction uses a small, gentle suction device combined with a microscope to remove ear wax safely. It is dry (no water flushing), and the practitioner can see exactly what they are doing through the microscope, so it is far more controlled than older syringing methods.

Microsuction is generally considered the safest method of removing ear wax. A trained member of our team examines each ear before starting, so if something looks different we tell you and adjust the plan.
Microsuction is usually suitable for:

What is microsuction?

Who will carry out my microsuction?
Microsuction at Medicine Stop is carried out by a trained member of our pharmacy team, under the clinical oversight of the responsible pharmacist. Every appointment takes place in our private consultation room on Church Street, Alfreton.
Does microsuction hurt?
Most people find it painless. You will hear the suction noise, which can sound loud because it is so close to your ear. The pharmacist works slowly and stops if anything is uncomfortable.
Do I need to use ear drops before I come?
It is not always necessary, but using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops for two to three days beforehand can soften the wax and make removal quicker. We can advise on the call before your appointment.
What if you cannot safely remove the wax?
If your ears need different treatment, or microsuction is not suitable on the day, we refund your fee in full and signpost you to the right care.
How is microsuction different from ear syringing?
Ear syringing uses water flushing and is the older technique. Microsuction is dry, more precise, and is now the preferred method on the NHS where it is available. We do not offer ear syringing.
