Shingles vaccination
Protection against weeks of nerve pain.
Shingles is the painful rash that can appear years after a bout of chickenpox, caused by the same virus reactivating. It is more common over 50 and the pain (post-herpetic neuralgia) can last weeks or months. The vaccine reduces both the risk of getting shingles and the severity if you do.
Who it's for
- Adults aged 50 and over who want the protection sooner than the NHS would invite them
- Adults outside the NHS routine criteria (currently aged 70–79) who want to be vaccinated
- Adults with a family history of shingles, or who have seen the impact in someone they know

Pricing and schedule
£240 total for the private course — two doses, given two to six months apart. The fee covers both doses, both consultations and aftercare.
Most people have only mild side effects (sore arm for a day or two, sometimes mild fever or tiredness). We explain what to look out for and how to get back in touch if needed.
Pneumonia vaccination
One dose, long-lasting protection.
The pneumococcal vaccine protects against the bacteria that can cause pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. It is most commonly recommended for older adults, when the risk and severity of pneumococcal infection rise sharply, and for younger adults whose health conditions put them at higher risk.
Who it's for
- Adults aged 65 and over who have not yet been vaccinated
- Adults under 65 with long-term health conditions that increase risk (heart, lung, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, weakened immune system)
- People who want the protection ahead of an NHS invitation

Pricing and schedule
£100 for a single dose. For most adults, one dose gives protection for many years — some people will be advised to have a booster after several years depending on their situation.
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived. The injection itself takes seconds.
Hepatitis B vaccination
Protection where the risk is real.
Hepatitis B is a virus that affects the liver, spread through blood and other body fluids. The full course gives long-lasting protection — we plan your dose schedule at the first appointment and add it to your vaccination record.
Who it's for
- Healthcare and laboratory workers, and others with possible blood exposure at work
- Travellers to areas with higher Hep B prevalence, especially for longer trips or work travel
- People living with, or in close contact with, someone Hep B positive
- Anyone who wants the protection and is not already covered through the NHS

Chickenpox vaccination
Chickenpox protection for older children and adults.
Chickenpox (varicella) is usually mild in young children, but it can be more serious in teenagers, adults, and people with weakened immune systems. The private vaccine is for older children and adults who haven't had chickenpox and want protection — or who are around people at higher risk.

Am I eligible for the NHS shingles or pneumonia jab?
The NHS offers the shingles vaccine routinely to adults aged 70 to 79, and to people aged 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system. The NHS pneumococcal vaccine is offered to adults aged 65 and over, and to younger adults with certain long-term health conditions. If you fall into one of these groups, it's usually arranged free through your GP. Our vaccinations are private — for people who fall outside the NHS criteria, or who want the protection sooner.
Why pay privately for shingles or pneumonia?
Most people pay privately because they fall outside the NHS criteria but still want the protection, or they want to be vaccinated sooner than the NHS programme would invite them. Some choose to pay so a worried family member can be reassured.
How long does the appointment take?
About 15 minutes from arrival to leaving, including the eligibility chat, the vaccination, and aftercare advice. For shingles, the standard private course is two doses, given two to six months apart.
Are there any common side effects?
Most people have only mild effects: a sore arm for a day or two, sometimes a mild fever, headache or tiredness. Serious reactions are very rare. We give you clear aftercare advice and what to look out for.
Can I have both vaccinations on the same day?
Often yes — the pharmacist will check your situation and confirm on the day. If you would prefer to space them out, we can plan that with you.
Do you offer Hepatitis B vaccinations?
Yes. Hepatitis B is a three-dose course we offer privately to adults at occupational risk (healthcare, laboratory work, anyone with possible blood exposure at work), to travellers visiting higher-risk areas, and to close contacts of someone Hep B positive. The standard course is at month 0, month 1 and month 6, with an accelerated schedule available if you need protection sooner. Each dose is £55, so the standard three-dose course is £165.

Who carries out the vaccination?
Vaccinations at Medicine Stop are given by a trained vaccinator from our pharmacy team, under the clinical oversight of the responsible pharmacist. Every vaccination takes place in our private consultation room on Church Street, Alfreton.
